Pocket Journal-Making (Sewn Board Binding)hosted by Studio45 Participants will learn the sewn board binding style, a bookbinding technique that requires minimal materials and tools while creating a book that lies flat when open, excellent for writing, drawing, planning, etc. Each participant will take home a 120-page blank pocket-size journal.

During a two-hour studio session, participants will learn how to:
  • Identify paper grain direction
  • Fold gatherings (“signatures”) with a bonefolder
  • Sew covers and signatures together with the French Link Stitch sewing technique

The instructor will discuss next steps for covering and decorating the journal you made as well as resources to learn more about hand bookbinding. Journal prompts will also be available for participants to take with them at the end of the session to inspire an entry or two.

2021 Solidarity Project Artist Talk: Brandon Harrington & Alex Bildsoe

Watch Here

Organized through The Solidarity Project, a conversation on May 30, 2021 with Brooklyn-based bookmaker Brandon Harrington + illustrator, writer, and baker Alex Bildsoe. Moderated by curatorial assistant Jack Holloway. The artists discuss new ways of being, thinking, and making through creating books.

The past year has prompted people everywhere to experience and reflect on solitude. Facing drastically new circumstances, we have had to re-learn the meaning of resourcefulness, community, and solidarity. The artists speaking with us have navigated this terrain and have found ways to create as individuals for and with the collective, reaching out in order to be themselves.

These artists share with what it looks like for them to start from scratch, to regard convenience as the enemy of creativity, and to facilitate new artistic possibilities through texts and objects. More info here.
